An Audience With Gerald Scarfe |
 |
SCARFE ON THE ROAD
A fascinating illustrated talk by Gerald Scarfe,
Britain's foremost caricaturist, covering 40 years of
his work: from the Sunday Times to Walt Disney, from
Pink Floyd to opera, from rock and roll to ballet and
from books to West End theatre.
|
Born in London, Gerald Scarfe was an asthmatic
child who spent much of his time drawing and
reading. After a brief period at the Royal College of
Art he established himself as a satirical cartoonist
during the early sixties, working for Punch magazine
and Private Eye; this led to work in British
newspapers and to a 35-year ongoing position as
political caricaturist for the Sunday Times. His work
has also appeared regularly in the New Yorker for
over 10 years.
Scarfe's film work includes designing and directing
the animation for Pink Floyd's The Wall, and he
became the only outside artist to design a Walt
Disney film when he worked on their animated feature
Hercules. |

Jamie Andrew - Life and Limb |
 |
In January 1999 mountaineers Jamie Andrew
and Jamie Fisher were trapped for five nights
on the stormbound icy summit of a French
mountain. |
Their rescue, which was one of the
most dramatic in the history of the Alps, came
only hours too late to save Jamie Fisher. Jamie
Andrew survived, despite suffering
hypothermia and appalling frostbite; days later
his hands and feet were amputated.
For many this fate would have meant the end of all
hope, but not for Jamie. Since losing his hands and
feet he has learned to walk again, taken up skiing,
run the London Marathon, and returned to climb
once more in the mountains that he loves so much.
Jamie Andrew's incredible story of determination and
courage is nothing short of inspirational. In June
2000 he climbed Ben Nevis, Britain's highest
mountain, raising over £15,000 for charity in the
process.
Jamie tells his remarkable story with passion,
enthusiasm, sincerity and humour and invariably he
leaves no-one in his audience unaffected.

Mercury Appearing As Queen |
 |
From the beginning Mercury's ambition was to
capture the true emotion, atmosphere and
sheer power that Queen themselves generated
in live performances.
|
Queen have a huge catalogue of hits, and Mercury
are adept enough to bring to life even the most
intricate recordings, without backing tapes, as well as
including some of the more unusual tracks such as
the Acoustic Flavoured 39 and Love of my life.
Perhaps Mercury's most memorable moment was
being invited to perform a live gig for Roger Taylor
and his friends.
Today, Mercury are enjoying success worldwide,
filling large venues and leaving audiences feeling fully
entertained by the kind of show Queen themselves
would have been proud to deliver. |

An Audience With Johnie Walker |
 |
Frank, honest and often very funny, this is a
fascinating and captivating insight into an
amazing life that will both inspire and
entertain.
|
From pirate radio to Buckingham Palace and
an MBE, Johnnie Walker tells the amazing
story of how he came to be one of the best
known and most loved broadcasters in Britain,
with a voice recognised by millions.
During his first seven-year period with Radio 1 from
1969 to 1976, Johnnie Walker established a
reputation as a DJ who accorded more importance to
the records he played than the chat in between. On
his lunchtime show, he pioneered new names like
Steve Harley, Lou Reed, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles,
and Steely Dan. Johnnie was front page news when
he described the Bay City Rollers as 'musical
garbage'; his outspoken views and insistence on
playing album tracks led to a showdown with his
Radio 1 boss and a move to San Francisco in 1976.
Johnnie returned home in the early 80s, and following
stints with ILR stations Radio West he returned to
Radio 1. Over 30 years of music 'fandom' was then
channelled into Radio 2's Drivetime show which he
hosted until March 2006. |

Tess Of The D'urbervilles |
 |
This passionate page-turner is brought to you by
THEATREWORKS which has gained a solid
reputation for staging some of our best loved novels.
|
After success with Far From The Madding Crowd:
"A joy to watch" Evening Standard
"A cultural Treat" The Independent
"A production of exquisite
sensitivity" The Telegraph
comes Tess - a maiden who falls victim to male lust
and social hypocrisy. Firmly rooted in Hardy's Wessex
and paying fine attention to period detail, it skilfully
recreates the story of the young girl who sets out, on
her drunken father's behalf, to claim 'kinship' with the
aristocratic D'Urberville family.
Pretty, innocent Tess is offered work on the estate and reluctantly makes her
home there - only to be seduced by 'bounder' Alec
D'urberville. Of course fate soon moves against her -
an illegitimate child, a wedding, abandonment and
murder all make for a thrilling, if rather tragic journey,
but relief comes in the form of the comic yearnings of
her flawed father and his struggles to prove himself
an aristocrat.
An exciting drama from its glorious May
Day opening to its dark climax amongst the brooding
ruins of Stonehenge - symbolic site of pagan
sacrifice.
